It doesn’t ever look like there was ever a major city here, does it? Read my explanation of this major city in the Northern Kingdom as the first comment…then leave your own.
This picture shows the ancient hill of Samaria which was located in the lands alloted to Manasseh. Many arch. and Bible scholars believe the area did not have many people living in it until the time of King Omri, the father of the more familiar King Ahab. Samaria became the capital for the Northern Kingdom (also referred to as Israel). Though you cannot tell anymore the town eventually grew to be the size of Jerusalem during Hezekiah’s time which was 150 acres. It was a well fortified town and its geography seemed to help. Samaria survived sieges by the Arameans (2 Kings 6), Assyrians (2 Kings 17), as well as the Hasmoaneans. Eventually Samaria came to refer not just to the city but to entire Northern Kingdom.
My 13 list for this week will be about King Omri and how he seized power along with more pictures and a couple of links.
