From ancient times, Acre was regarded as the key to the Levant because of its strategic coastal location. It was a focal point for Christian forces during the Crusades.

Wikipedia states: The Levant is a geographical term historically referring to a large area in the Middle Eastsouth of the Taurus Mountains, bounded by the Mediterranean Sea on the west, and by the northern Arabian Desert and Upper Mesopotamia to the east. The Levant does not include the Caucasus Mountains, or any part of the Arabian Peninsula. It is an imprecise term, because it refers to layers of cultural habitation, rather than to the land itself. It is a much needed term, however, given that throughout much of history the region referred to has had many different national or political names.
looks like a very interesting place. i wish we had more fresh air markets here in the states. when you want to buy fresh, local produce, it can be difficult to find. then again, we're not the rural society that we once were.
