Wordless: Verse 34

Paul had quite a journey to Rome where he was eventually executed. I began to think about where he spent his final days and did a little research to see if I could find out more about it. The images here are copyrighted by Historylink101.com & found at the Italy and Rome Picture Gallery.

Notice the cross is upside down. Paul's prison is also the site of Peter's prison per tradition, but there is no scholarly evidence supporting this. Peter was crucified upside down.

Today if you want to see where Paul spent his final days you would need to visit the Capitoline Hill in Rome where the church, San Guiseppe dei Falegnami can be found.

When translated the name of the church means Saint Joseph of the Carpenters referring to the father of Jesus.

The church was built over the remains of the Mamertine Prison and is probably the location where Paul wrote to Timothy to hurry before winter and to bring his cloak (2 Timothy ).

Paul’s first imprisonment was more honorable as it was house arrest, but his time at Mamertine was in a dungeon cell. Many of his supporters fell by the wayside because they did not want others to know they were connected to Paul.

You can see more images of Mamertine and the church located above it here, here, and here.

What times those were! To think of the passion and compassion with which the church was formed. Thanks for bringing it home to me tonight.
